代謝症候群(metabolic syndrome, MS)的發生與身體活動量減少、老化、基因和環境等因素有關，是許多代謝疾病的共同特徵，而肥胖及缺乏運動的生活型態是重要的潛在危險因子。符合MS的項目愈多，其所可能發生心血管疾病及糖尿病的風險愈高，所合併的死亡率也愈高。MS又可稱爲胰島素抗性症候群(insulin resistance syndrome)，原爲人體對抗肥胖的一種防禦機轉，其致病機轉主要導因於胰島素抗性的發生。有關胰島素作用調節、造成胰島素阻抗的相關因素，也是許多慢性病的共同根源。因此，探討運動對MS與胰島素作用的影響，有助於改善胰島素阻抗及MS相關之危險因子。
