In this study, 132 florists in Tainan City are used as research samples to discuss their demands on the professional competencies of floral designers and influencing factors. The results showed that the structures of the professional competencies of floral designers can be divided into “basic competence” and “design competence”. Among which “basic competence” mainly consists of “marketing management”, “physical management”, “environment, health and safety management” and “financial management”. As for “design competence”, 7 factors are included:“product manufacturing skills”, “enthusiasm and devotion in design learning”,“knowledge in protecting and caring for plants”, “mastery and cultivation in floral culture”,“work ethics and morals”, “location decoration competence”, and “knowledge in flower and plant gifts”. According to the factor scores, it was shown that the basic competences florists place the most importance on are “financial management”(0.20), “environment, health and safety management”(0.04), and “marketing management”(-0.10). From this result, it reveals that florists still focus on conservativeness and pragmatism in their demands for basic competence. In the case of design competence, the top three were “knowledge in protecting and caring for plants” (0.34), “product manufacturing skills” (0.12), and “enthusiasm and devotion in design learning” (0.06) respectively, indicating that competences concerning the basic gardening knowledge on flowers and plants is an essential prerequisite for floral designers. Moreover, regarding the influencing factors on the demands of professional competence, it can be discovered that the “approval of skill tests” is the most widely affected in this field. Furthermore, experience and cognition on the demands towards each professional competence differ with “gender”, “age”, “level of education”, “seniority”, and “license qualifications”. The influence of “marital status” was, however, insignificant. The above is herewith provided to agricultural authorities and organizations, florists and floral educators(those engaged in floral education) as an advice and proposition.
