The art of Chinese calligraphy is a fantastic spectacle in the history of human culture. The rich expressiveness of the forms of Chinese characters and the uniqueness of the writing tools gave birth to abundant artistic language in the points lines, and shapes, and eventually coherent forms and contents of the calligraphic art were born. The purposes of this article are threefold: firstly, to examine the relationship between Chinese characters and the calligraphic art; then to investigate the connotations of the traits and morphology of Chinese characters; thirdly, to sum up the principles of construction by examining the origins of Chinese characters. Chinese characters were created for practical purpose, yet their construction traits endowed them with artistry. The change of Chinese characters interacts with the evolution of calligraphy. The simplification of the construction of characters results in the evolution of calligraphy, which generates dynamics to drive calligraphy toward infinite potential artistic expressions. The origin and development of Chinese characters are closely linked with the civilization of Chinese people. We can say that without Chinese characters there would be no calligraphic art nor brilliant Chinese culture.
