Along with commercialization of the Chinese media in the 1990s, Chinese Communist Party officials gradually put an emphasis on propaganda and ideological work to promote the importance of "melody" as a symbol of mainstream CCP ideology. Ever since the coming to power of the fourth generation leader, Hu Jintao, the number of "melody" films has grown significantly. They are extensively used in movies, TV episodes and documentaries. "Melody" films not only win approval from the public, but also show strong commercial implications. This article analyzes "Melody" films during Hu's period of office, and their cultural political motives and purposes.
