This paper examines the impact of Jyh yu (?- 311) on Liu Xie's (464-522) study on literary genres through a comparison between their approaches and aims at a better understanding of the development of literature studies in early China. The objects of study are the 18 remaining sections in Jyh's the literary Genres and Their History and the 50 sections in Liu's the Literary Heart and the Carvings of Dragon. The paper has seven chaptes. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the main body is devoted to the comparison of the two writers in terms of their (a) classification of genres, (b) tracing of the origins of genres, (c) naming of the genres, (d) provision of examples, and (e) discussion of the genre characteristics. The result of the study indicates that, although most of his works are on loner available at present, Jyh indeed had certain original ideas on literary studies, which were adopted by Liu and consequently preserved as a part of our cultural heritage.
