The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of functional exercise intervention on physical fitness of the elderly in nursing care facilities. Methods: Paricipants were elder residents recruited from nursing care facilities in Kaohsiung. Experimental methodology was employed, and subjects were randomly separated into experimental group and control group with 12 Paricipants in each group. Paricipants of experimental group performed 10 weeks of moderate-intensity functional exercise, during which they exercised five times per week, and each exercise session lasted for thirty minutes while subjects of control group did not perform any kind of intervention. Data were collected and analyzed by statistical tests such as two-way mixed design ANOVA and t-test. Results: After 10 weeks of intervention, subjects showed significant improvements in flexibility, sit-to-stand, grip of right, balance, get-up-and-go, shift activities, walking, and Barthel Index.
Conclusion: From the perspective of program planning, we suggest that health care facilities develop various of exercise programs systematically for the elderly based on their functional living skills. Developing exercise programs will be beneficial for the institutionalized elderly to improve their physical fitness in the long term.
