For the past few years, a large wave of new occupations have emerged under the popularity of internet and personal computers. As one of these new occupations, digital illustrator has shown its great vitality accompanied by the explosive development of Chinese animation and game industry. However, there is rare research on this new type of work, and even less on this career field. Therefore, as a member of the digital illustrators group, the author also wants to discuss the work style and career development of this occupation from the perspective of personal growth and work experience.
The data collected in this study comes from two sources: one is the author’s autoethnography, and the another one is the interview on the life experience of five digital illustrators. In terms of data analysis, this study mainly refers to the level of narrative structure proposed by Pentland and the interpretive phenomenological analysis proposed by Smith et al. On the basis of reviewing previous studies, this paper probes into the work style and career development of digital illustrators.
In terms of research results, this study unfolds the following findings: Firstly, in a light of work analysis based on O*NET architecture, it is believed in this paper that like most other traditional painters, digital illustrator emphasizes the ability level as well as the cultivation of knowledge and skills, which is crucial to the painter’s work success or failure, and even its career development. Secondly, compared with traditional jobs, the digital illustrator has lower requirements on the job qualifications, and the influence of education background on the career development of an illustrator is also negligible, so the illustrators at different levels can find suitable jobs in line with their actual conditions, and then seize the opportunity to seek the development of knowledge & skills and career in the work. Thirdly, distinct from other painting work, digital illustration has its own unique way to commercialize paintings other than its emphasis on the illustrator’s personality, thinking and emotion as traditional painting. Meanwhile, it relies on the internet as the work field, and the work prefers to cooperation than simple employment. As digital illustrators often work among multiple organizations, the digital illustration industry also presents an inter-organization and boundaryless state. Fourthly, in terms of the digital illustrator’s career development, it shows three stages: the early stage consists of interest and dream, the middle stage of turning dream into reality, and the later stage of professionalization, Finally, based on the above research findings, a double advancement model for the career development of digital illustrators is proposed in this paper, which centers on the development of creativity and person. Additionally, the limitations and defects of this study, as well as the future research direction are also discussed in this paper.
