The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of dance and its development in the new Grades One Through Nine Curriculum that emphasizes integrated learning and teaching from primary through junior high school. Dance had been part of physical education. It is now, in the new curriculum, attributed to two separate learning areas: “Health and Physical Education” and “Arts and Humanities”. Consequently, there is a need to reexamine the function of dance and the way in which dance is to be integrated with other subjects. Key points of this paper also include the resources available for current and future teachers to teach dance. It is hoped that such effort will help give dance a suitable role in the new education climate, thereby enabling students to have better opportunities to experience and explore dance.
