The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of gratitude intervention on college students’ gratitude perceptions and attitude in a selective dance class. The research subjects were voluntary students in elective dance classes. The research adopted quasi-experimental design and action research methods. First, with quasi-experimental design method, the students were randomly devided into experimental group (n=37) and control group (n=47). Both groups underwent 90 minute dance class once a week for 12 weeks. Then the one-way analysis of variance were applied to study the differences between pre and post tests. The results showed that: the experimental group and control group both had no statistical significance. Students were able to perceive gratitude with the intervention of gratitude in dance classes. Second, the study data was composed of a series of observation in classrooms, participants’ learning evaluations, interviews and the journals of teaching reflection. Results indicated that: the gratitude behavioral and connotation change included three higher-order themes--‘‘gratitude evaluation’’, ‘‘behavioral change’’ and ‘‘affective feelings’’. The “gratitude evaluation” category comprised 2 sub-themes ‘‘like’’ and ‘‘positive’’. The “behavioral change” category comprised 2 sub-themes ‘‘family’’ and ‘‘other’’. The “affective feelings” category consisted of 2 sub-themes ‘‘pleasantly surprise’’ and ‘‘attitude’’. This study suggests that college students have experienced their gratitude behavioral change and gratitude perception due to the positive feelings derived from the participation in the gratitude intervention dance classes. They have changed their attitudes towards gratitude and bring forth good moral character.
