孔子整體思想學說，從學理分解的角度，可分析四部分，即道（天）、德（人）、仁（內）、禮（外），一個整全地理想人格生命應是內外相貫天人合一的，對孔子天命思想之探討，是研究儒學宇宙本體部分一個重要環節，從孔子對天命思想的闡述中，使人了解他在宇宙中的地位，體認人何者當為，何者不當為，從而找到人安身立命之處；就具有瞭解儒家思想天人學說的意義。 孔子學說的重心在一個仁字，但孔子仁學的提出，與他的天命思想分不開，從思想的邏輯意義說來，天命思想比仁學思想更具根源性。眾所周知，孔子學說重在實踐，孔子指點學生往往從人倫日用著手，所謂「子罕言利，與命與仁」（子罕9），「子貢曰：夫子之言性與天道，不可得而聞也」（公冶長5），天道、性命、仁、似為孔子所迴避言談的話題，但卻為儒家思想學說不能少的一部分，尤其是孔子天命思想，更是瞭解儒家本體形上學須正視面對的一個問題；掌握孔子天命思想，即是對孔子仁學內容有一根源性理解。
