有清一代，臺灣的官紳庶民藉由傳統雕版印刷術的紙性傳媒，融入科舉文風、政治教化、社會教育、宗教信仰各面向，風行草偃，深植人心，獲得極佳的成績，「出版」事功實不可沒。惟因颶風、洪澇、地震等天災侵擾無間，加一祝融兵燹層出，人為無心或意的破壞不斷，對於當時出版的紙、木質文物而言，保專環境嚴苛險酸，頗不理想，也造成木刻雕版與印免紙品幾乎湮滅殆盡，目前很難採取全面性的觀照。 筆者鎖定此一命題，爬梳個人寓目所及相關臺灣的方志史料、鄉野摭聞、藝文故實，整清代宮方及私家得藏書狀況，希冀填充清代出版史的另筆補白。

During the Ch’ing Dynasty, important changes in printing occurred in Taiwan society. By using traditional block printing techniques, publications, boomed in many aspects of society, such as in the fields of official examinations, political pamphlets, educational publications, as well as religious teachings. However, only a few of the published works survived due to such natural disasters as floods, typhoons and earthquakes. Calamities caused by human beings such as wars and arsons also did much damage to the printed works. In addition, the poor quality of printing material was one of the causes that affect the life of publications as well. Poring over the government documents such as local history, private book collections, and other sources, the author hopes to unearth new facts of publication in Ch’ing Taiwan, so as to fill out the missing chapter in the development of printing in the Ch’ing Dynasty.
