Jin Ping Mei was the most successful type of novel that characterized family-society secularity in the latter stage of Ming Dynasty. However, the development of secular novels declined since The Dream of the Red Chamber published (1791) in the middle stage of Qing Dynasty. It was because novels in that era tended to medium length. The other reason was that combination of novel types became popular. This article discusses the style of SanXu Jin Ping Mei that lies in between elegant and secular tastes. The writing skill of San Xu Jin Ping Mei and The Dream of the Red Chamber and was distinct from its contemporary secular novels such as Shen Lou Zhi, Qing Feng Zha and Ya Guan Lou.
