The academic journals in the arena of design is one of the communication channels between the researchers and practitioners. In the research field of "design" keen to pragmatism, the academic journals of design present in distinctive appearances in the field of academia. The review of academic journals is to learn from the past in order to see the future. Apart from learning from the contexts in the past, it is more crucial to deuce the possible direction in the future thereafter. 21 issues have been published since the initial issue of The Journal of Commercial Design in 1997. The year 2019 happens to be the centennial of National Taichung University of Science and Technology. The reflection as well as the review of this Journal's research trend on this very time does has its significance in history. This paper conducted content analysis on the history of and the dissertations in The Journal of Commercial Design. The research was divided to three phases to capture the development context and to propose the positioning for its future advancement. The results of research are as follows: (1) There are 343 dissertations by 287 authors throughout the 21 issues; (2) dissertations with two or more authors account the most of the publications; (3) the natures of the researches can fall into six categories, the qualitative, the quantitative, and the mixed as well as creative work/project, technique report, and book review, among which the qualitative ones are the majority; (4) the methodology employed the most is questionnaire method, followed by content analysis and archival research; and (5) the comparison of the influence coefficients in journals related to design reveals that Journal of Design comes the first, followed by Journal of Interior and Architectural Design, and The Journal of Commercial Design ranks the third. Based on the aforementioned results, the study is to propose the positioning for development and the potential direction for the academic development in the realm of design for The Journal of Commercial Design, so as to serve as a reference for the researchers and practitioners in design.
