This paper deals with the use of body as metaphor in Confucian political theories. An analysis of Confucius' conceptualization of "self" reveals that "my body" and the "body of society and/or state" are integrated into a harmonious whole. As followers of Confucius, Mencius and Hsiin Tzu use body as a metaphor in their articulation of political theories, yet the meanings they convey are different. While Mencius stresses relativity between the ruler and his subjects, Hsiin Tzu argues for the absolute relationship between the two. This paper also reaches the conclusion that the use of the body metaphor in political articulation involves problems of spatio-temporality that deserve further study.
