For Victorians, sexuality is not simply a matter of libidinal urges. It is a complex of desires, attitudes, roles, and norms that is virtually coextensive with all social life. To portray a complicated picture of Victorian sexual culture within any literary discourse requires a cultural and social framework and analysis. The present study of Victorian sexual culture is an attempt to draw a diverse (or even a contradicting) picture of Victorians’especially novelists' obsessive perception of sex and sexuality. It is expected to debunk the myths of sexual repression or passivity assumed by many critics in their research on Victorian fictional world. By applying Foucault's power and pleasure mechanisms, this paper investigates some complex, or even contradictory, mechanisms which produce dominants and oppositions, subordination and resistance. Weeks's idea of social organization, on the other hand, provides the present study with a social arena to put these mechanisms in work. To trace out a “clear” picture of sexual culture in the Victorian fiction, this study employs Foucault's discourse theory and Weeks's social organization of sexuality as a springboard, from which to initiate a cultural investigation of discourses on sex in Victorian fiction.
