     本文以Morton & Frith(1995)對發展精神病理學因果模式的觀點,從認知的層次,陳述目前有關自閉症精神病理主要的四項假說,即心智理論缺陷(theory of mind deficit)、情感缺陷(affect deficit)、執行功能缺陷(executive function deficit)和中心聚合缺陷(central coherence deficit),並討論這四項假說解釋自閉症精神病理學的優缺點、所面臨的困境及其可能的解決之道。目前雖然未有一種理論性觀點可以說明自閉症的異質性的全部行為特徵,但未來的研究方向已有初步共識。本文亦簡要回顧台灣目前在自閉症研究領域的進展,並建議在有限的人力下整合研究資源的必要性。
     According to Morton & Frith (1995), a behavioral syndrome can be understood at three levels--behavioral, cognitive, and physiological. This paper focuses on the cognitive level. Four hypotheses concerning autism are critically reviewed, namely, the theory-of-mind deficit, affect deficit, executive function deficit and central coherence deficit hypotheses, and the strengths and weaknesses of each are discussed. Taiwanese studies of autism are also reviewed. While the heterogeneous manifestation of autism is not readily explained by any single hypothesis, researchers have reached some consensus on methodology and directions for further research. Collaboration among researchers with integration of resources appears to be critical to overcoming current research limitations.
