In Art and Visual Perception, Rudolf Arnheim said, “When two equal objects are shown in the left and right halves of the visual field, the one on the right looks larger. For them to appear equal the one on the left has to be increase in size.” This claim was supported by P. A. Oppe. Seen as “true”, the claim had since been applied to college entrance examinations and used as teaching material in the fields of painting, design and architecture, etc. The present researchers aimed to examine such claim and investigate its validity among present day Taiwanese respondents. Literature review, questionnaire and picture analysis were employed in the study. It was found that Arnheim’s particular observation was not strongly supported by the result of the present investigation.
