Music therapy (MT) is a newly developing mode of therapy in medical practice and has been widely used in a variety of populations. Most professionals hold a positive attitude toward its effect. Nowadays, MT in Taiwan is mostly performed by nursing staff with music listening. However, in Western countries, the mainstream of MT actually addresses the importance of active participation of subjects and interactive mode of MT. Since March 2010, an interactive MT was conducted by a professional music therapist in a rehabilitation ward at Taipei VGH. Based on age, gender, preferred songs and related previous experiences of each subject, appropriate songs were chosen for activities. Through the interactive MT, not only cognitive recovery, but also the self-confidence and expression of patients were enhanced. In this clinical practice, a good example was provided for the use of MT and this pointed to other application in similar wards in the future.
