Aim: Many studies have found that background music influence human behavior and work efficiency. This research would explore the influence of background music on people’ s work attention level, work pleasantness, and work performance from the viewpoints of occupational therapy and operation management. This research also aims to analyzes how different types of background music --and how listeners’ degree of preference for the background music, and compared how music with, and without, lyrics affects human attention.
Methods: This pilot study takes the Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), and using Chu’s Attention Test, electroencephalogram(EEG), and JACNeuF(Japanese and Caucasian Neural Faces), aims to analyzes the influence of background music on people’ s work behavior.
Results: This study has concluded that listener’s attention was indeed influenced by background music. Yet it has less to do with the type of the music, and it has more to do with listener’s fondness for the music; This study also have found that --relative to no background music-- the more a test taker likes or dislikes the background music, the more possible that music would have affected his/her attention level; The comparison results revealed that background music with lyrics had significant negative effects on concentration and attention; and this study has proved that in a work environment, playing background music tends to influence worker pleasantness in more positive fashion than playing no background music does.
Conclusions: Playing background music to process workers in work environment can increase their work pleasantness, but would affect the work attention sometimes. Going forward, this research will use more behavior tools and larger pool of samples, so that our study of background music’s influence in a work environment is able to come out with results which are more diversified and forceful.
