In 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick carries the theme of Technology’s impact on Humanity’s formation and continuance. Kubrick speculates about how Humanity’s formation is contingent upon tools. Kubrick conveys human subjective development as a journey by technological development: one that utilizes Technology, then defers to it, and, finally, breaks from it. All three of these technological moments that elevate Subjectivity indicate that Technology facilitates the journey into Humanity and post-humanity; the relational order and power dynamics between humans and their tools are dynamic and polarizing. At times Technology helps Subjectivity arise, and, at other times, Technology suppresses it, which, paradoxically, also helps the human self-awareness needed to become a subjective agent settle in. The reason why Technology can have this dual effect (facilitation and suppression) will be shown to be linked to an imminent transformational potential Technology has for new ways of Being. This thesis frames Technological potential as a disconcerting glimpse into the real that provides an invitation for new opportunities but also repels and makes a selection for normative trajectories more probable rather than less. For Kubrick, it seems that what is selected in his Star-Child at the final moments of the film is the reprisal of Humanity from within the context of an absolute openness, which Kubrick figures through the child being in space, and which this thesis takes to mean the infinite potential that post-humanity affords for differential modes of Being. Technology facilitates the journey defined by a narrative that will not easily fall away: it is the posthuman who desires the human, to become human or remain human, to be a human posthuman.
