二十世紀的九○年代開始，關心非營利組織研究理論發展之學者日趨增多，經濟學在此領域的理論建構，一直是社會科學各學門中投入最早與成果最豐碩的學門之一。到了九○年代，一些經濟學者開始反省過去的理論觀點之妥適性而陸續提出修正的觀點。社會學、政治學、法學、心裡學、企業管理等學門亦急起直追，紛紛從各自領域的學術觀點來探討非營利組織的行為及其與社會其他部門，如政府、市場、社區/家庭等部門的互動關係。近年來，部門互動的類型與模式之發、公民社會議題的研究，以及第三部門在公民社會建構中的角色討論，不斷出現在研討會與學術期刊上，即充分反映了上述的現象。本文論述近年來歐美學者對於第三部門興起原因之探討、經濟學理論觀點的發展過程與反省，以及部門互動的觀察與理論模式建構的努力。本文的目的在於透過對於這些文獻的初步論述，進而強調學術界與實務界有系統地針對第三部門研究的相關理論進行整理與論述的重要性與迫切性。

An over the world, we see the trends of increasing interaction among the third sector, the public, the private for-profit, and the community sectors. The related concepts and theories regarding nonprofit organizations have been developed by academics of social science since 1970s. This paper is going to review the recent studies of “the Third Sector”, especially from the perspective of economics on nonprofit organizations. In addition, the typologies and models of relationships between nonprofit and other sectors will also be examined. To understand conceptual frameworks and models of the third sector, three analytic approaches will be applied: (1) organizational level, (2) institutional level, and (3) civil society—intermediary/collective level.
