In recent years, Korean academics have paid more attention to the studies of Han Wen novels and have achieved a lot in this field. As a Korean scholar once said, however, there is still a lot to exploit in 野談集. In fact, 野談集 has played a key role in the development of Korean literature and is a very important work for the study of Korean novels and modern short stories. No matter in the form of short story or zhang hui xiao shuo, or its author is a literary figure or an anonym, Korean Hang Wen novels such as 金鰲新話, 企齋記異, 溪西野談, 青邱野談, and 六美堂記 reflect on imperial examination and social identity, depict the paradox of the society, or record the anecdotes of ghosts and gossips. In sum, its contents are diverse and can be used as a lesson to discuss the beauty and ugliness of human nature, and teach people how to work on the basis of moral ethics. Most important, these novels vividly record the local customs and the phenomenon of folk culture in different generations so that they become an invaluable literature for scholars to study the traditional Korean folk culture. With an emphasis on folk culture such as sortilege, foretelling, feng shui, and environment, this paper aims to analyze the elements of folk culture in the 17th to 19th century Korean novels, especially in 於于野談 and 青邱野談. It is hoped that this paper can be of some importance for the study and exploitation of recent Korean folk culture in the future.
