學歷的增高對結婚機會有兩大影響，第一類為：學歷增高直接改變個人的學歷資源與學歷門檻所帶來的直接影響(學歷的「淨效果」)，第二類為：學歷增高使所得增加與年齡增大而帶來的間接影響。過去的研究(張榮富，2004)顯示學歷的增高對結婚機會的「綜合效果」(第一類加上第二類影響)，男性為正效果，女生為負效果，存在著男女差異。亦即學歷的增高將帶來男性的結婚機會的增加，而帶來女性的結婚機會的減少。本文運用擇偶網站上的資料與「相配區」的方式估計學歷的「淨效果」。研究顯示，大學學歷男女有最大的「相配區」，高中職者次之，碩士學歷者最小。大學學歷是男女結婚機會「淨效果」的「頂點」。亦即當年齡與收入一樣而只有學歷不同時，學歷對結婚機會的影響，既非遞增也非遞減，而是男女皆為先升後降。學歷的「淨效果」對結婚機會的『影響模式』，男女並無差異。這個發現亦澄清了，高學歷男性(碩博士)之所以在一般人印象中會有較高的結婚機會，並不是因為其高學歷本身的影響，而可能是因為高學歷連帶而來的年齡較大與所得(或社經地位)較高的間接影響所造成的。
There are two kinds of effects on marriage opportunity caused by individuals’ education improvement. Firstly, education improvement directly increases the mating resource and threshold of education. This is the “educational net effect”. Secondly, education improvement will increase the mating resources and thresholds of income and age, hence indirectly affect individuals’ marriage opportunities. The effect, which includes the first and second above, is defined as the “educational combination effect”. A previous study (Chang, 2004) indicates that educational combination effects are positive for men and negative for women. This paper develops a concept of “suitable pool” to estimate the gender differences of changing the marriage opportunity by improving education levels, holding income and age constant. Opposite to Chang’s findings (2004), this study finds that a bachelor’s degree is the “ceiling point” of marriage opportunities, and the “educational net effect” on both men and women is negative from bachelor to master. A comparison between these two studies is discussed in detail in this paper.
