The children's museum is a distinctive museum type. At the very beginning, the children's museums were not built up for the preservation of collection but promotion of children's education. By reviewing the 100 years' development, it is found that the children's museums have been largely affected by social-cultural context, such as concepts of raising child, children psychology, educational theories, educational policies, etc. The children's museums are visitor-centered and social-oriented, and they are often affected by social changes of communities. Since the 1980s, the Brooklyn Children's Museum has supported children, teenagers and families in its neighborhood by holding various activities and programs, which consequently empowered the community residents.
