What the Song called "Han Tang jiu jiang"(漢唐舊疆the old borders of the Han and Tang dynasties)tended to be a political expression that changed along with political realities, rather than referring to all the territory that had actually been under the control of the two dynasties. After the Yongxi War, the Song Dynasty gave up using language signifying the unity of the Han and the barbarians, and Han Tang jiu jiangbecame the main expression used for questions such as opening up new frontier land and dealing with Youyan, Xixia and Jiaozhi. By the time of Emperor Renzong, the phrase and its connotations were basically fixed as meaning Youyan, Xixia(including Hexi and other territory), Hehuang and Jiaozhi. Emperor Shenzong inherited the wording and connotations of the phrase from Emperor Renzong and under this banner drew up and put into action an overall plan for territorial expansion along the border aimed at regaining Hehuang, Xixia and Jiaozhi. Different parts of the frontier where land was opened up were linked together. Han Tang jiu jiang was not only apolitical expression, but also a political framework possessing executive significance.
