Taiwan’s traditional technical art has received gradual recognition since 1970s. Lukang is one of originating places for its development, from which derives a presentation of woodwork and Master Li, Song-Lin (1907-1998) was its most prestigious woodcraftsman. Master Li received the first Prize of Cultural Heritage awarded by Ministry of Education in 1985 and received the title of Important Folk Artist accredited by Ministry of Education in 1989. This paper is a research of Li, Song-Lin’s carving career, to explore his transformation from a craftsman to a master artist. It is concluded that the emergence of a master artist goes beyond inherent talent to entail supports from crafts union, influences from local cultures and a fit to the social transition. Moreover, there are also descriptions on how Lukang confronts its economic regression and re-orients its traditional industry into a new direction. Finally, the paper hopes to benefit the research and continuation of woodcarving and technical art.
