In the Southern Min topolect, the construction “na?7…na?7…” could be used to express either two parallel events or increase of the degree of property. It is suggested in this paper that, based on evidence from ancient documents and usage in modern topolect, the two usages of this construction in Southern Min originated in the Old Chinese construction”ruo…ruo…”
This construction, meaning “likeness,” “similarity,” “suspicion,” and “ assumption” in Old Chinese, were retained and inherited by the Southern Min topolect as well. However after the grammaticalization of the original meaning of “likeness,” the usage of parallelity began. Furthermore, since “A and B” could be reanalyzed semantically as “leading and following” by their linear order, the construction develops a new usage of increasing degree when B is a stative verb, in which the construction meaning is reanalyzed as “the property of B is increased by the leading of A.”
