Ever since the beginning of life on earth, the world has been shaped by the presence of water. The geographical location of water largely dictates where man can settle, and indeed, where water supplies were plentiful, great civilizations have arisen. Throughout history, water has, on the one hand, been a slave to the people, whilst on the other hand, their master. The ancients invariably endowed natural phenomena with will and feeling, with culturally-diverse societies creating strangely similar myths. Early people symbolized everything that appealed to the human mind, since all of nature was revealed to them in symbols. Water was symbolic of the Great Mother and associated with birth, the feminine principle, the prima material, fertility and refreshment; however, water was also associated with submersion and destruction. Taoists regard water as the symbol of humility, since it always seeks the lowest place, whilst in Chinese philosophy 'weak overcomes strong, soft overcomes hard'; thus, water is soft, yielding and pliant, as a woman should be. Water also has symbolic meanings in many religions. Water is used to symbolize the washing away of sin in Christian baptism; whilst in the Jewish faith, water is a symbol of purity, and to Hindus, a symbol of fertility. This paper discusses the various meanings of water in a mythical context, dealing with the related literature, theoretical considerations, the symbolic meanings of water, water in western and oriental mythology, water in philosophy, and water and literature. An approach to teaching students about water in a mythical context is also suggested prior to closing the paper with some concluding remarks.
