"Hard translation" is a method characteristic of Lu Xun's translation activity. Analyzing of this uniQue translation phenomenon should go beyond the traditional critiQue of "faithfulness" and "eQuivalence" as it ignores the rich cultural connotation embedded in hard translation. The paper tries to unravel the reasons for Lu Xun's profuse usage of hard translation in his translation career, especially in the translation of theory books, from the perspective of cultural studies. A cultural probe into the phenomenon will be conducted from four aspects: hard translation in the translation of Buddhist classics and theory books; hard translation, the intellectuals and political manipulation; hard translation in the literary circle under the control of communism; hard translation in the language reform and rethinking of Lu Xun's views on language.
