Purpose: This study aims to investigate the correlation between university students’ attitude towards leisure, life stress, and physical and mental health. It refers to the guidelines for analyzing the mediator variables proposed by Sobel (1982), Preacher and Hayes (2008) to examine mediators of life stress. The research purpose is to understand the real meaning behind university students’ attitude towards leisure and university students’ stress and health. Method: Research tools included scales of "leisure attitude", "life stress", and "physical and mental health". The subjects were students enrolled for the first semester of academic year 2013 at public and private universities in Taichung and Changhua areas. A total of 976 valid samples were collected. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to assess the fit of structural equation models to data. Path analysis was performed on the three latent variables. Lastly, the mediation effect of life stress was examined as a latent variable. Results: University students’ attitude towards leisure have a negative impact on life stresses yet a positive impact on psychical and mental health. In addition, university students’ life stress has a negative impact on their physical and mental health. University students’ life stress has a mediation effect between university students’ attitude towards leisure and university students’ physical and mental health. Conclusion: Based on the results, suggestions are proposed concerning the factors affecting university students’ attitude towards leisure, life stress, and physical and mental health, for the reference of university teachers and counselors.
