The palji legend that spread among Paiwan indigenous ethic group in eastern Taiwan is explored in this essay. Firstly, the content of palji legend and the popularity of it will be introduced. Secondly, certain features of the circulation of palji legend will also be summarized according to an essay entitled “The Cases of Evil Eye in the Paiwan Ethnic Group ”, which was written by a Japanese anthropologist, Mabuchi Toichi. Because legend is a literature genre, which can easily reveal the local characteristics of a region, I also pay attention on various palji legend that were popular in other areas to point out the uniqueness of the geography, ethics and history of Taitung area. Lastly, some results are discovered that palji legend was frequently told to present the interactions and conflicts between Paiwan and Puyuma ethic groups in Taitung and the supernatural ability of palji, which is employed in wars, was emphasized in their narrative. In addition, the relationship between oral narrative and hierarchical society in Paiwan will also be presented in this essay.
