This study, part of a team initiative involving all seven Overall Goals attached to Fu Jen Catholic University’s Identity and Mission Statement, focuses on the first and most fundamental of them, namely: Human Dignity. The Goal reads as follows: Fu Jen affirms human dignity and recognizes all basic human rights, with special emphasis on freedom of conscience and religion, and academic freedom. It deals with the subject from the stance of the need of the non-Christian faculty and staff members, who form the majority of Fu Jen's academic community and for various reasons may not sufficiently understand what her identity and mission are really about with human dignity as its defining value. With this over-riding aim in mind the course of investigation proceeds as follows: Using contextual analysis of present-day reality, the first chapter highlights the significance, challenges, and relevance of human dignity to university education in general, and to Fu Jen in particular. - The following chapter, employing critical historic analysis, demonstrates the distinctiveness of the Catholic University's commitment to human dignity. - The next chapter examines Fu Jen University's commitment to the Goal of Human Dignity using SWOT methodology. The final chapter, based on the insights gained in the process of investigation, offers initial suggestions aimed at overcoming some of Fu Jen's weaknesses while taking advantage of its strength and opportunities. The suggestions are intended to stimulate the kind of in-depth multi-level ongoing dialogue that will facilitate personal identification with Fu Jen's mission and goals, and make each community member's contribution to the common cause more meaningful, personally fulfilling, and effective.
