The thesis focuses on Chinese Sonnets (known as Shang Lai). Although the text has existed for around one century, studies for Chinese Sonnet are still insufficient. Chinese Sonnets originated from the Western Sonnets. Chinese Sonnet in China and Taiwan has gradually developed into different styles, along with the maturity of languages and rules in Modern Chinese poetry. The content and meaning of Chinese Sonnet, however, is not redefined, along with the renewal of Chinese Sonnet. Therefore, we have little understanding of many classic texts. In this thesis, we research important issues on the Chinese Sonnets. First, through careful observation, examination, and referencing materials of Chinese sonnet texts, we re-define "chinese sonnet" category by analyzing and contrasting between the Western and Chinese sonnets. Second, we explore the development and variations of these texts under Chinese context. Finally, we discuss the aesthetic value of the Chinese sonnet in Modern Chinese poetry
