Time is one of the central themes in the work of the contemporary Taiwanese poet Wang Qijiang. While adopting the convention in classical Chinese literature of using water as a metaphor for expressing the passage of time, Wang uses distinctive images of the sea as the point of convergence of various tenses. In contrast to traditional Chinese boudoir poetry, Wang's poems in this genre describe the passage of time, and are based on his many years in the navy, while he was out at sea on active duty, anticipating reunion with his wife. Wang also vividly recounts his past experience in contrast with his present self-view, and repeatedly makes detailed inquiries into the vexing questions of the meaning and purpose of life and death. In this paper I investigate the various aspects of time which play a prominent role in the poetry of Wang Qijiang
