Novel in prose (Bi-ji-shiou-shuo) continued the Chinese novel tradition and became popular in Ch'ing Dynasty. It consists of an important step in the development of Chinese traditional novel. But under the shadow of the influential Serial novel (Jang-hwei-shiou-shuo) and Vernacular novel (Bai-hwa-shiou-shuo), Novel in prose (Bi-ji-shiau-shuo) is not often seen in literary history and in research papers. To know more about this lack, this article concentrates on Menghan's Essays, appeared in the mid-term of Ch'ing Dynasty. First, it clarifies the notion of Chinese traditional novel, then discusses the versions of the Menghan's Essays and its content. By means of messages in this paper, more information concerning the situation of Novel in prose in Ch'ing Dynasty will be provided.
