隨著知覺現象學的發展,人們日益感到,身體的"缺席在場"依然是一個切實存在的問題。在這種背景下,出現了具身體現研究,即身體研究由"身體觀"轉向"身體感"。感官民族志不僅涉及人文社會科學的一個新研究領域——身體感,而且是一個重要的新的方法論。以知覺現象學、人文地志學為理論基礎的感官民族志,其實踐與其被定義為參與、觀察和言語互動的混合,毋寧為一個具身的、具地的、感官性的和移情性的學習過程。感官民族志力求多媒體表征,意在尋求觀眾或讀者的移情性參與,以此激發出他們的親切感和"通感",使他們獲得充分的認同。
