This thesis points out that Jin Shengtan 金聖嘆 used four criticism methods for his commentary on the Outlaws of the Marsh 水滸傳: resolved, imitation-history, imagery and contrasted. In addition, this article discusses the important functions, merits and demerits of his adaptations of these methods and clarifies their significance in the commentary history of Chinese novels and literature. On the basis of these discussions, evidently his comment methodology was incredibly effective for analyzing literary works and provided a criticism model, which held great influence thereafter. Therefore, this thesis considers that the criticism methodology and literary theory in Jin's Criticism of Outlaws of the Marsh share equal value.
