The object of this paper is to reflect the relationship between general and professional education in higher education. As one of most important parts of the Reform of University in Taiwan, general education, which claims the holistic education as its ultimate end, is still regarded as the instrument of professional education. Professional thinking dominates the design of general education. Takes the general education of Tzu Chi Univesity as example, this paper attempts to argue that any breakthrough of general education will face two rigid realities: habitus of professional thinking and market orientation of higher education in Taiwan.
