This paper focuses on Taoist medical practice in use during the Song Dynasty as recorded in the “Yijian zhi.” It studies four aspects of this practice: first, use of white magic or special techniques by the Taoist priest to cure the sick; second, common people’s worship of celestial beings to obtain help in curing disease; third, believers’ learning of medical techniques under Taoist master; and fourth, lay believers’ performance of white magic to heal. The paper is divided into two major parts: 1. The first part studies 33 of the 105 cases recorded in the Yijianzhi that involve Taoist healing, cases that are divided into three categories: Taoist priests and masters, celestial beings, and lay believers who practiced healing. 2. The second part analyses song Dynasty Taoist medical concepts and techniques based on these cases. The medical opinions of three Taoists Wang Wenqing, Zhang Xujing, Lu Shizhong are examined. Four different aspects of medicine of medicine are considered in this discussion: (1) the arts of the medical practitioners, (2) arts for maintaining good health, (3) Taoist exorcism, and (4) Taoist liturgy.
