嚴復為清朝末年的啟蒙思想家，在全面譯介西方學術的同時，也嘗試從中國固有的文化資源中尋找與西方學術相通的思想元素，因其對道家思想有濃厚的興趣，從而發現《老子》、《莊子》與近代西方學術有相通之處，於是著《老子評點》與《莊子評點》，以西方進化論和民主、自由等觀念對中國道家思想進行闡發，其融通中西的思路表現為「以西方學術解老莊」的評點方式，既反應出時代精神，也使老莊思想的詮釋在清末民初有了全新的開展。本文探討嚴復引西方學術，如赫胥黎《天演論》的進化思想、孟德斯鳩《法意》的民主思想、盧梭《民約論》的自由平等思想、當代科學觀念與方法、西方宗教的教義，以詮釋老莊思想的內容，並評其得失。

Yan Fu is the initiation thinker in Qing Dynasty last year. While he translates West academic comprehensively, also tries from the Chinese inherent culture resoureces to seek for the thoughe element which academic is interlinked with the West. Because the author himself has the strong interested to the Taoism thought to further discover that“The Lao Zi”、“The Zhuang Zi”two books academic has with in the modern times many are interlinked place . Therefore Yan Fu begins to write “In the book of The Lao Zi’comment”and“In the book of Zhuang Zi’ comment”.By ideas and so on the Westem：theory of evolution, democratic and freedom carries on to the Cinese Taoism thought explains. Then allows temporary credit the China and the West. The thought way to display “In Academic Annotates Lao-Zhuang’s Explantion Way” by the West. The one hand responded the spirit of age on the oteher hand also enabled the Lao Zhuang thought the annotation initially to have the brand new development at the end of the Jingdezhen.
