排灣族奉太陽神為萬物造主。同為始祖之一的蛇類在蛇生口傳故事中，亦不時扮演著誕育人類或幫助人類始祖誕生的角色，因此，排灣族社會向來有「靈蛇」信仰存在，不殺百步蛇的習俗也保留至今。矛盾的是，排灣族射日殺蛇的故事和創生神話同時流傳，二者故事內容比較之下不免產生衝突。就信仰的本質來看，排灣族是精靈（超自然力量）的崇拜者，被賦予精靈力量之物事（在排灣族中以圖騰為典型）就是其崇拜的對象。本文所謂的神物分離觀，係假設排灣族以精靈的有無作準則，用以區隔神與其相對應之物。例如太陽「神」與太陽其「物」不必然等同視之，因為神有精靈，物卻不見得有。以此觀點，試圖對排灣族這類看似崇神而殺神的口傳故事內容，找出較為合理的解釋。
