This paper deals with the phenomenon of new texts composed by Yu Dingjun, a hereditary「master of telling scriptures」(jiangjing xiansheng 講經先生)in Shanghu 尚湖 town of the Changshu 常熟 city area in Jiangsu province. It is quite an outstanding event in the development of the old tradition of baojuan performances in this area, usually called "telling scriptures"(jiangjing 講經)or "scroll recitation"(xuanjuan 宣卷), and testifies for its recent survival, revival, and development. This paper discusses the origins of the new texts composed and edited by Yu Dingjun, their role in performances, and the significance and influence of this phenomenon in the history of baojuan performances in Jiangsu and in Changshu in particular.
