本文主要是希望透過檢閱並整理評估學者針對政治民主化的現象所已發展出來的不同觀點與理論途徑，來建構一套比較完整，能夠分析臺灣政治轉型的理論分析架構，從概念的形成，轉型的原因、過程、結果，到民主鞏固的問題都加以探討。本文主要的觀點是要兼顧政治民主化的『先決條件』和轉型過程的動態發展，才能充份解釋臺灣民主政治轉型此一複雜的政治現象。這種同時觀照好幾種變數的研究途徑，當然會犧牲『簡約原則』，這是理論建構的兩難。
This essay tries to build a comprehensive theorical and analytical framework for the political transition in Taiwan by reviewing the existing literature on political democratization. The essay discusses the formation of the concept, the factors, process, and results of political transition, and the problems of consoldiating democracy. The main thesis is that to explain such a complicated phenomena as the political transition in Taiwan, both the “preconditions” for and the dynamic process of the transition have to be examined. “Parsimony” may have to be compromised if all the variables of the transition are to be accounted for, such is the dilemma in theory construction.
