陳之藩曾經在書中說到他留學時期所書寫的散文有一個共同的地方，「那就是在寂寞的環境裡，寂寞的寫成的。」（陳之藩2006b: 145）然而這份寂寞不是單純異鄉游子的寂寞，而是動盪時代下有志青年的寂寞。他說到：「時局如此荒涼，時代如此落寞，世人如此鹵莽，吾道如此艱難，我們至少要像在鐵蹄踐踏下的沙土，發出些微弱可聞的聲音，給這個無以名之的年代作一無可奈何的腳註。」（陳之藩2006b: 147）可見他的寫作是出於對世道的關切與憤慨，文字中流露的寂寞則是那份眾人皆醉我獨醒的喟嘆。 陳之藩開啟了留學生散文的先聲，文章中展現出高度的人文關懷，以及對自由民主的理性思考。本文即以其在美國留學期間所創作的《旅美小簡》和《在春風裡》為研究對象，分析五○年代美國的存在主義對陳之藩的人生觀有何影響。他如何在散文中巧妙地穿插「對照」、「情景」與「典故」等技巧，成功地營造出「寂寞」的意象。希望能藉此對陳之藩留學時期的散文，有更深刻的解讀。

Zhi-fang Chen once said in his preface that the three essay wrote in the early times have one common point which was wrote in the lonesome environment, all alone. It is not only because of the solitary of a student who left his country but because of the lonesome of a person who saw the lost inthis era. He hope through his writings may wake his fellows up. Both of them were wrote in the United States and were wrote in the late 50's. In 50's, the existentialism was spreading in the United States therefore Zhi-fan Chen at that moment at that place was no doubt be influenced.
