　　　　　發展地理學在西方學術的生根發芽，來自於對資本主義不均衡發展邏輯的批判及 反省，它的出現足以代表地理學新的生命力、及合乎環境潮流的方向，也代表結束地理學過 去二元論的契機。發展地理學不但是一個以人與環境關係為本的區域地理學，也是一個企圖 了解並詮釋影響當代社會人地關係的主要機制，尤其是資本主義的政治經濟機制，如何影響 人與環境的關係；它更是一個對人的價值與人的發展存有高度理想的學術範疇。臺灣本土地 理學者關於人與環境的諸多實證研究中，大抵仍未明確解釋或詮釋型塑人與環境關係的重要 動力與機制，遑論本土的發展地理學的理論與實踐。
　　　　　The origins of development geography are rooted in the discontent towards the logic of capitalism. With capitalists pursuit for capital accumulation, unavoidable uneven development may lead to detrimental results for man-land relations. As a subfield of geography, development geography values human development through sustainable man-land relationship. It is very much a normative discipline that calls for interventions from various forces in society. Indigenous empirical studies on man-land relations are numerous, but seldom can one come across a study with rigorous investigation of mechanisms that shape man-land relations.
