Changing Process of Marital Counseling—Perspectives from Couples
Shu-Chuan, Liang
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to explore the changing process and the changing elements of the marital counseling as well as the relative culture issues in the marital counseling process.
A feminism marital counselor expert with 15 years marital counseling experiences was invited as the counselor in this study. Two couples with marital distress were recruited. One of the two couples with domestic violence and intimacy problem attended 10 sessions and finally were the only participants studied. Another couple with properties fight and difficult in making divorce decision attended 4 sessions, however, drop out due to legal and research ethical issues. For each session, the participating couple accepted the marital counseling for 90 minutes first, and then the wife and the husband were interviewed for 50minutes separately to report their marital counseling experiences. After the end of the data collection process, the interviews were analyzed, and the systematic changing process of the marital counseling was developed.
The results were discovered including:(1)The wife and the husband had their own changing processes in the marital counseling. The wife focused more on reflecting and deciding whose behaviors should be changed to increase couple intimacy, whereas the husband focused more on evaluating the marital counseling effects and deciding how much he would involve in the marital counseling. (2) The couple relationship was changed during the marital counseling process. It went through 4 continuous stages. At the first stage, both of the couple insisted on the other changing his/her destructive behaviors. At the second stage, both changed for each other. At the third stage, the wife pursued the husband to clarify the extra-marital affair events and the husband withdrew. At the final stage, both of the couple refused to give up their own insistences, and began to withdraw from each other and to redefine their own role position in their marital relationship. (3) Gender culture, the traditional Chinese family and marriage ideology, and the ingrained traditional concept of respecting the expert’s leading could explain the husband’s and the wife’s different attitudes and behaviors in participating in the marital counseling process and their experiences of attending the counseling. (4) The systematic changing elements of the marital counseling including the pro-changing basic conditions, the counseling interventions and the out session influential factors were developed.
Discussions about the results and about the research ethical issues in the study were made. Finally, suggestions were also made about the training education of the marital counselors and the practical work of the marital counseling, as well as the study methods and issues of the marital counseling studies in the future.
