Sexual assault is a serious crime against the sexual autonomy of an individual's will and violates the right to personal autonomy. The World Health Organization has also emphasized that sexual violence is a serious violation of personal autonomy and public health, and can have short- or long-term effects on women's physical, psychological, and sexual health. Since 1997, when the Sexual Assault Prevention and Control Act was enacted, Taiwan has made progress in its policy to eliminate sexual violence against women and has provided a wide range and depth of services. Our limited statistics have found that 20% of survivors have experienced repeat violence, does this mean that existing sexual assault service strategies are not meeting the needs of survivors? Therefore, it is essential to study the survivors of sexual revictimization so that their voices can be better heard and services can be designed to meet their needs.
This exploratory study uses a narrative approach to understand the life course of adult female survivors of sexual revictimization. The study population is adult females with repeated experiences of different incidents of sexual assault who have never received services or are no longer in the service system. The subjects in this study all volunteered to participate, with a total of three respondents. Data were collected using semi-structured in-depth interviews, approximately four to five times per respondent, and analyzed using the narrative analysis method of "holistic-content" and "Labov‘s model" to develop narrative themes and research findings.
This study found that sexual assault is an extremely objectifying experience; therefore, objectification theory is well suited to understand and explore the experiences of repeat sexual assault women. The life journeys of female survivors of
sexual revictimization are characterized by multiple transformative processes in which socio-cultural, early family life experiences, and various experiences of daily life come together to construct how survivors view the value of their bodies and femininity. Because these interviewees had extremely objectifying experiences during their sexual assault experiences, this traumatized them and triggered their journey of self-objectification. This interaction reduces the individual agency of the survivors, leaving them with limited perceptions, negotiated communication, and the ability to protect themselves in the face of the sexual assault event, and so are sexually assaulted again.
Finally, based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made: i. Social work practice interventions: services should be provided by a trauma-informed perspective, emphasizing empowerment, encouraging narrative experiences and self-connection, and recognizing the impact of materialized experiences, thus helping to enhance the survivors' motivation. Policy planning and development: We need to examine the impact of the original practices, advocate for school-age students and men, and accumulate primary data for regular analysis. Aspects of future research: We can increase the diversity of samples and accumulate empirical studies on topics such as self-objectification and repetitive aggression, interruption of self- objectification, and empowerment.
