Purpose: Women of mature years carry many roles and many burdens; if they develop cancer that cannot be cured, they may be stricken in body, mental and spirit as well. They may need medical caregivers to sympathetically and professionally attend on them, as well as to accompany them through the valley depths of their life journeys. Method: This research utilizes the narrative method; through the empathetic listening of the researcher, it allows the patient with life-threatening illness, in the process of relating the experience of the illness, to pass through the pain and anxiety, to reminisce on her life stories, and to seek the meaning of life. At the same time, it is hoped that this approach will help medical caregivers take on a prevailing attitude of humanity and empathy when caring for the patient. Results: show that the research participants, in the process of story narration, spontaneously generate a quest for the meaning of suffering, and achieve sublimation of spirit, such that they can recognize the blessing that comes with illness, as well as its positive value. The researchers (nursing staff), through providing genuine care, giving, accompanying, listening, and reflection, nurture the significance of life and attentively serve the patient. Conclusion: It is anticipated that this research may provide medical staff with a new method for humanities education and a dimension for reflection, in order to cultivate excellent and humane caregivers.
