1995年2月「小西園」掌中劇團團長許王應戲迷之邀拍攝二十集的連本戲-《三國演義》,但因故未能公開播映,一直「包存」於倉庫中,直到2005年由「國立傳統藝術中心」購得播映版權,要翻製成DVD公開銷售,至此塵封已整整十年的《三國演義》布袋戲,終於「出土」得以重見天日,而此舉不但保存也能推廣古典布袋戲的表演藝術之美,更讓世人見識到一代掌中戲大師許王不凡的編演功力。《三國演義》雖屬「古冊戲」,但書中的俠烈與武打情節,已是「武俠戲」的先驅,能駕馭「三國戲」,就表示能兼顧「古路戲」的「腳步手路」與「武俠戲」的奇情關目,甚而進一步掌握「金光戲」的懸疑怪誕,因此它是一個布袋戲演師揚名立萬前必要鑽研的戲齣。本文特以這二十集《三國演義》為例證,探析「小西園」許王與《三國演義》的機緣及其傑出的編演功力。
In Feb 1995, on request by enthusiasts, 'Xiao Xi Yuan' Hand Puppet Show troupe leader XU Wang produced a series of "Romance of Three Kingdom". For certain reason, the series was never shown to the public and has been kept in storage until 2005 when 'National Center for Traditional Arts' acquired the distribution rights and made into DVD for sale. Since then, this "Romance of Three Kingdom" puppet show with a whole decade dusts has finally came out from the grave and saw the light of day. Not only did it promote the art of classic puppet show, it gave the general public a chance to get to know a master of the time of Wang's skills, and his proficiency in composing and showing had puppet show. Although "Romance of Three Kingdom" is a "Historical Play", the figure's story and fighting details described in the book is the pioneer of 'Martial Arts Show'. Able to handle "Three kingdom Show' means able to handle the techniques of plays of "Classic Play" and the thriller and detective chapter of 'Martial Arts Show', and even the mysteriousness and weirdness of "Jiang Guang Xi". Therefore, it is the best show any puppet show performer can use to perfect his/her skill. This thesis uses this 20 part "Romance of Three Kingdom" series as basis to further analyze "Xiao Xi Yuan" Xu Wang, his coincidence with "Romance of Three Kingdom" and spectacular performance.
