For Chinese women living in traditional Confucian society, their upbringing and cultivation consisted primarily of texts and pictures of female education. Within the traditional female education, Lienu Zhuan, or Biographies of Exemplary Women, and related pictorial representations of women described in these biographies, became key references. In view of the lack of discussions on the historical contexts of these pictorial representation, this paper will analyze the current materials and trace the development of these pictorial representations. The aim of this paper is to offer a conceptual framework to understand how these pictorial representations evolved with the Confucian ethics.
